Repowering an existing vessel can deliver meaningful improvements in fuel efficiency while retaining the performance operators depend on. For NRMA’s Manly Fast Ferry, the upgrade of Ocean Rider demonstrates that potential in one of Sydney Harbour’s busiest passenger services.
The project combined Volvo Penta D16 power with an IMO Tier III exhaust aftertreatment solution, giving the oldest vessel in the fleet a new lease of life.
An Upgrade Informed by Operating Data
Manly Fast Ferry operates between Manly and Circular Quay, with the service carrying more than three million passengers annually, according to the video.
As part of an NRMA fuel initiative, Ocean Rider was selected for a repower. Planning involved Volvo Penta’s team in Sweden, analysis of existing fuel consumption and vessel loads, and input from naval architects to assess how the proposed installation would meet the operator’s requirements.
This preparation helped align the engine upgrade with the demands of a busy passenger timetable.
Lower Fuel Consumption, Maintained Performance
In the video, NRMA reports a 17% reduction in fuel consumption following the repower, with no change to operating capacity. The operator also reports that the vessel remains as reliable and as fast as before.
For a vessel making frequent daily crossings, improved fuel efficiency is a valuable operational outcome. The crew’s feedback was also positive, with Ocean Rider’s master describing the result as better than expected.
Taking the Next Step in Emissions Reduction
The installation also incorporates an IMO Tier III aftertreatment package. Volvo Penta describes the combination as providing the power and reliability required for demanding ferry operations while significantly reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.
In the video, the team explains that choosing this package went beyond the emissions requirements applicable to the project at the time.
